Red River Adventures is both an AIARE provider and an American Avalanche Association-accredited program

The AIARE Avalanche 1 course is a 3-day, 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management, where students learn essential backcountry travel planning, field decision-making, and avalanche rescue techniques.
The Red River AIARE 2 is a 4-day course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision-making skills in more complicated situations such as: being a leader within a small travel group; traveling in more complicated terrain; and/or developing a travel plan where online resources are scarce.
The AIARE Avalanche Rescue Course is an 8-hour, hands-on program teaching the latest companion rescue techniques. Participants receive professional coaching, practice realistic scenarios, and earn a rescue card upon completion.

FAQs ABOUT aVALANCHE cOURSES IN UTAH

Familiarity with your ski touring or splitboard gear is highly recommended. AIARE courses cover a lot of material, and struggling with equipment can take away from your ability to focus on the curriculum. If you’re new to touring, we suggest booking an introductory ski touring day with our guides to help you get started and build confidence with your setup and travel.

An avalanche safety kit (beacon, probe, shovel) is required. Ski/splitboard gear needed for field days. We provide Avalanche gear for those who need it. Skis, splitboard, skins, and poles available upon request.

All fieldwork takes place in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, with classroom components online or in Salt Lake City.

Our instructors are certified AIARE providers. Each of our staff members holds different certifications. Courses are taught by IFMGA, Apprentice, Assistant, and Certified Ski guides and other professionals with years of guiding and teaching experience.

AIARE 1 is the starting point. Our Low Ratio AIARE 1 is for people who have tons of experience, good physical ability, and who want to formalize their avalanche education. Avalanche Rescue can be taken at any time. AIARE 2 is for experienced backcountry travelers who’ve completed AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue.
