Welcome to the longest canyoneering route Moab has to offer! The Rock of Ages canyoneering route, also known in more recent years as Pool Arch Canyon, features three rappels, a tight “slot,” potholes, some easy scrambling, and views of seldom-seen arches. A hike through this route will leave memories that will last a lifetime.
This route is a step up in distance and difficulty from our Medieval Chamber and Morning Glory routes as well as our Entrajo Canyon and Chamisa Canyon routes, but it’s well worth it for those in good physical condition. This is always a thriller and a favorite of our guides.
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Duration: About 6 hours
Length: 6 miles / 9.6 km
Number of Rappels: 3 (160 feet / 48 meters; 100 feet / 30 meters; and 50 feet / 15 meters)
Minimum Age: 12
Meets: Varies depending on season; see calendar
We had an amazing experience. Our guide, Adam, was knowledgeable, fun, and easy to talk to. We did the Rock of Ages canyoneering trip because we like to climb and hike but don’t have the mountaineering knowledge for the rappels and other technical skills. On the trip, we did some incredible rappels, waded through chest-high (or deeper!) water, scrambled up and down sandstone—it was like an obstacle course we had all to ourselves. Adam was super professional and gave us enough support I felt safe but let me figure it out/do it on my own. I can’t recommend this experience enough for people who like to do cool stuff outside.

Chase guided my fiancé and I through the Rock of Ages Canyoneering hike and he was a wonderful guide! We were new to rapelling, but we felt safe with him the entire time. He was also very upbeat, polite, and provided us with great recommendations for the area for our visit. Would book again with Chase!

My husband and I had a fun-filled morning hiking and rappelling with our experienced guide. It had been awhile since either of us had rappelled, but we felt 100% safe and comfortable during our adventure. In fact, for a couple of slightly fluffy 50-somethings, I thought we did well! The hiking was the perfect distance and blend of flat stretches and more technical bouldering, which he helped us through easily. And the three rappels were fun, Fun, FUN! I can’t wait for our next outing with Red River Adventures!

My wife and I had a great time with Mary. It was the highlight of our Utah trip, which is saying a lot since we also kayaked down the Provo, explored the Fiery Furnace at Arches, and spent full days in both Arches and Canyonland. Mary was a delight – she was very encouraging and entertaining, as well as educational. As novices to canyoneering, we weren’t entirely sure how rough the day might be. It was physically challenging – this is no ordinary walk in the park – but so worth the effort. Since it was just the three of us, it was like a private trip in our own private canyon – absolutely beautiful. The three rappels were the cherry on top of a fantastic trip.

What you should pack:
Absolutely — Rock of Ages blends exciting rappels, scrambling, water-filled pot holes, and a slot section into a route that feels adventurous from start to finish. It’s a step up from our other canyons.
Three rappels, including some with airy exposure, scenic sandstone corridors, fun scrambling, and the sense of progression as you work your way through the canyon.
Yes. We use a releasable rappel system with two ropes for every descent. This setup allows your guide to control or stop the rappel at any time. It means that if you let go or need assistance mid-rappel, we can lower you smoothly to the ground. This dual-rope, guide-managed system gives you both security and confidence while you enjoy the descent.
Once we start the hike, going back is not really an option. The guide or guides are responsible for getting the group through the route. There is no one available to go back to the start or drive you back to town.
No, the only way to exit is to complete the rappels.
Available—just ask, and we’ll tailor your adventure.
