Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.

Red River Adventure is the place to go for an Avy course! The guides are extremely educated, fun, and it is clear they love what they do. They were able to answer all my questions and beyond. John and Jake did a great job with the course, leaving me with more confidence, but respect, in the backcountry than ever before.

Did an avalanche rescue course with John and it was fantastic. I feel so much more confident in my ability to respond appropriately in an avalanche situation. The course was well designed to practice multiple scenarios. It was just the right amount of serious and fun.

Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip; to understand basic decision-making while in the field; and to learn techniques required to find and rescue a buried person, if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught.

No, but yes. While it is not required, it is HIGHLY recommended that you have familiarity with your touring set-up and transitions. Touring experience can be at a resort or in the backcountry. This leaves more time to focus on the curriculum.
Yes. After online learning and an initial Zoom meeting on Day 1, you will be in the field and touring days 2 and 3. You should be able to confidently ride blue square terrain in any condition.
Participants should be able to climb and ski 1500+ vertical feet and travel 3 miles in a single day and sustain multiple days of touring.
You’ll learn what is, and isn’t, avalanche terrain, trip planning, using avalanche forecasts, how to use a framework for decision making, and practicing rescue techniques.
RRA and AIARE limit the courses to 6 students to each instructor. We typically have 2 instructors on a course.
