I don’t really know how to express my gratitude for Jake Scheinman and Ben Wu. I did an AAIRE 2 course and not only are they extremely knowledgeable and proficient but they are extremely understanding and inclusive.
I have an ongoing knee issue and was open from the very beginning about it and they encouraged me to give it a shot if I felt comfortable. It was the push I needed to be able to go spend an exceptional day with these two. I was slower than the rest of the group and never did I feel like I was a burden or an inconvenience. They uplifted me and made me feel like a part of the time despite my struggles in the course.
Red River is hands down the best guiding company in the Wasatch. I have interacted with a few different companies and this one continues to exceed my expectations. Thank you for supporting my adventurous aspirations. I couldn’t do it without you.

This course is for those that have taken the AIARE 1 & AIARE rescue (or AAA accredited equivalent) courses. They are prerequisite and proof of completion is required!
This is the course to take if you ski or ride steeper than 30 degree slopes! The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain.
Red River Adventures will provide:
A full equipment list will be emailed at time of reservation. Here’s a preview.
What you should bring:
We realize that many level 2 courses are 3 days. We believe that this level of education requires more time and energy so we are using a 4 days curriculum. We will spend each day in the field and include 1-2 classroom sessions (real life, not zoom!) to debrief.
This course is for those that have taken the AIARE 1 and AIARE rescue (or AAA accredited equivalent) courses and want to further their avalanche skills.
This it the one that most backcountry skiers and snowboarders should take. If you ski more than 30-degree slopes, this is the course for you.
Yes. AIARE 1 (or an equivalent AAA avalanche 1 course) and AVALANCHE RESCUE are BOTH required before taking AIARE 2.
You’ll develop advanced decision-making skills, practice snowpack analysis, and refine group leadership and communication in complex (avalanche) terrain.
Rescue is reviewed, but the main emphasis is on leadership, terrain management, and advanced hazard assessment so that you can better manage the risk of being where snow slides.
Expect to travel in more complex backcountry terrain in the Wasatch, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in real situations.
